UST's Betsy Hupp and St. Olaf's Jenny Wetzig battle for control in Saturday's 4-3 UST victory.

Betsy Messner's first goal of the season, in the 88th minute, lifted the host St. Thomas women's soccer team to a 4-3 victory over St. Olaf in MIAC play Saturday in St. Paul.

The Tommies (9-5 overall, 4-4 MIAC) improved to 7-2 at home this season and secured a .500 or better finish under first-year head coach Sheila McGill.

UST goalie Amanda Domeier raced out of the box to stop a St. Olaf breakaway with four minutes left and the score knotted 3-3. Moments later Carrie Lauterbach capitalized on a St. Olaf error and passed to Messner, who converted the winning goal.

Four different players had goals for UST and Lauterbach scored three assists.

St. Olaf (2-10-2, 2-4-1) scored all three goals on breakaways and rallied from a 3-1 halftime deficit. The Oles had a chance in the final 1:00 with a long scrum in front of the Tommie net with three shots deflected by Tommie defenders.

St. Thomas plays at home Tuesday against Macalester (4 p.m.).
