Sophomore Mariann Kukielka on Monday was named MIAC Athlete of the Week in women's swimming and diving after she helped the Toms post a rare dual meet victory over conference power Gustavus.
UST outscored the host Gusties 131-111 on Saturday to complete the first undefeated dual meet season in program history. Gustavus has won five of the last six MIAC team titles.
Kukielka (SO-Shoreview/Mounds View) had three strong performances with one individual victory and two fast relay splits to help the Tommies finish first and second in her respective races.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Kukielka zipped to victory with a time of 59.13. She swam a swift split of 25.88 in the 200-yard medley relay to help St. Thomas finish first against the Gusties, who had been ranked No. 1 in the MIAC in that event. She also swam her fastest split of the year -- 25.68 -- to help the Tommies finish second in the 200-yard freestyle relay. This season, Kukielka is ranked No. 2 in the MIAC in the 100-yard fly, and No. 12 in the 200 fly.
Kukielka and her teammates have one more competition prior to the 2013 MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships, which will be held Feb. 14-16 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. St. Thomas will host the Conference Invitational in its home pool this weekend with Friday's action starting at 6 p.m. and Saturday's portion beginning at noon. The Tommies will also send its divers to the Minnesota Challenge at the U of M on Feb. 9.
