Swimming's Jena Root gets MIAC weekly honor

St. Thomas All-American Jena Root (SR-Little Canada/Roseville) Monday was named Player picMIAC Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week.

It's the second time in the last 13 months Root has received the award,

Root recorded her best times of the season when the Tommies competed at Saturday's SJU/CSB Winter Invite in Collegeville. Individually, Root had first-place finishes in the 100 backstroke (1:00.78) and 200 backstroke (2:12.48). She was also a member of the first-place 800 freestyle relay, which clocked 8:06.93, and she swam the leadoff leg of the 200 medley relay in a time of 28:23.

At last year's MIAC Championships, Root swam on two first-place relays. She broke a 17-year-old school record in the 200 back prelims as she clocked 2:07.03, then placed third in the finals in 2:07.07.

At last March's NCAA Championships, Root earned All-American honors with a seventh-place finish in 57.01 in the 100 backstroke finals. Her prelim time of 55.89 earlier in the day broke her own school and MIAC all-time best of 56.66.
