St. Thomas senior thrower Shara Guidry had a big day at Tuesday's Cobber Twilight meet in Moorhead as she broke two of the oldest school track and field records on the charts. She also won two throwing events and placed third in another while getting NCAA provisional qualifying marks in all three.
Guidry, the 2007 NCAA Division III champion in the discus, broke a 20-year-old record in the discus with a winning throw of 152-0. That broke Karen Hinnenkamp's mark of 151-8 set in 1988. Competing near her hometown of Thief River Falls, Guidry broke a 27-year-old record in the shot put with a winning toss of 45-10 1-2. The old record was 41-1 held by Lori Dietz. Guidry's discus throw might be good enough to get her included in the 30-woman field for the April 25-26 Drake Relays in Des Moines. It missed an NCAA automatic mark by just two inches but ranks third in the nation. Her shot-put best missed an NCAA automatic mark by just nine inches but ranks second in the nation. Guidry took third in the hammer throw in 152-1, which hit the provisional standard. Teammate Carol Comp placed third in the discus in an NCAA provisional mark of 141-11. Comp placed fifth in the discus in 147-5 and took sixth in the shot put in 37-7 1-4. These were the lone UST athletes to compete. St. Thomas will compete Saturday at the St. Olaf Invite.
