Katie Theisen's fast steeple leads Women's Track

The St. Thomas women's track and field team had 10 firsts and two NCAA provisional qualifying marks at Saturday's St. Olaf Invitational.

Junior Katie Theisen made her debut in the steeplechase and took first in a school-record time of 10:59.98. That met the NCAA provisional standard and ranks ninth in the country thus far in 2008. Theisen also won the triple jump in 36-3 1-2.

Senior Carol Comp took second in the hammer throw in 151-0 and just eclipsed the provisional standard. Comp also placed fifth in the shot put (39-7 1-4).

Nikkie Arola won the 100 meters (12.68) and the 400 hurdles (64.80), the latter less than one second off the provisional qualifying time. In the 800, Erin Sprangers (2:15.27) and Kelly Russ (2:15.88) placed 3-4, just off the 2:15.0 provisional time.

UST swept the 4x100 (49.37) and the 4x800 relays (9:45.64) and took second in the 4x400 (4:00.66).

Other Tommie winners were Allie Metzler in the 3,000 meters (10:55.78); Shara Guidry in the discus (138-5) and shot put (41-10); and Alyssa Salomone in the high jump (5-1 1-4). Guidry also placed fifth in the hammer (141-2).

Kate Staat took second in the 200 (26.60) and third in the 100 (13.15). Selina Dehn placed third in both the triple jump (35-8 3-4) and long jump (16-9 1-4) and tied for fifth in the high jump (4-9 1-2). In the 800, Erin Sprangers (2:15.27) and Kelly Russ (2:15.88) placed 3-4. Anne Iddins placed second in the steeplechase (11:24.28). Melissa Kuebler placed second in the 100 hurdles (16.34). Jenna Ewing placed second in the 100 (13.05). Kyley Crotty placed third in the javelin (108-10).

Other top-seven placewinners were Julianna Gorder, sixth in the long jump (16-4 1-2); Julie Anderson, seventh in the 1,500 (4:58.34); Angela McGehee, seventh in the 100 hurdles (17.44) and the pole vault (10-0); Brittney Daniel, seventh in the pole vault (10-0); Rachel Borka, tied for fifth in the high jump (4-9 1-2); Megan Honan, seventh in the hammer (138-4); Felisha Willaert, seventh in the discus (123-9).

The Toms will compete at the Macalester Invite next Saturday.
