Statz clocked a lifetime best 17:10.72 for the 3.1-mile race -- the seventh fastest Division III time this year. Her previous indoor 5K best was 17:58 at the March 2012 MIAC Championships.
She trailed only teammate Taylor Berg, who won in 17:00.90. The duo took traded the lead until the final laps, as they pushed the pace in an attempt to achieve national qualifying times.
Berg and Statz rank 1-2 on the 2013 MIAC season lists for the mile, 3,000 and 5,000.
Last cross country season, Statz took sixth in the conference, eighth in the region and 22nd at nationals to earn All-America honors.
Next Saturday, Statz will run the 1200 on the Toms' distance medley relay at the U of M Open as St. Thomas tries to post an NCAA qualifying time.
