Katie Arnes is NCAA All-American in high jump

The St. Thomas men had two NCAA runners-up and three All-Americans and placed seventh with 17 points in the team standings Saturday at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships in Bloomington, Ill.
Sophomore Roman Cress had a photo finish in the 55 dash finals with Lincoln's Dayne Ross, as both clocked 6.25, but Ross was awarded the gold medal.
In the 1,500, Ryan Kollmann took second in 3:53.52. Kollmann was seeded 18th and was the final qualifier after five runners scratched to run other events.
The UST women had one All-American as junior Katie Arnes jumped 5-7 for a third-place tie in the high jump and earn five team points.
Four other MIAC athletes were All-Americans with top-six finishes -- Hamline senior April Felt and Augsburg senior Carrie Lind finished 1-2 in the weight throw. Felt set a meet record in throwing 56-6 3-4, while Lind threw 53-10 1-2. St. Olaf's Cory Dingels was fourth in the long jump (23-5 1-2); and Macalester's Kajerero Ssebbaale was fifth in the treiple jump (47-8 1-2).
Friday's highlights
St. Thomas senior Joe Bilek placed sixth in the weight throw at 54-3 3-4 to earn All-America honors.
UST had two athletes make the Saturday's eight-man finals with the second-best prelim times -- sprinter Roman Cress (SO-Mpls./South) ran 6.27 to win his heat of the 55 dash. Cress, who ran 6.20 last week, will have a battle with Lincoln's Dayne Ross, who won his heat in 6.23.
Ryan Kollmann (JR-Lino Lakes/Centennial), who had the slowest qualifying time in the 13-man 1,500 field, ran 3:55.14 for the second-best Friday time to make the eight- man finals.
For the UST women, Katie Arnes (JR-Coon Rapids) is tied for ninth among 18 qualifiers in the high jump (5-5 3-4) and will compete Saturday.
On Friday, Katie Bestul (JR-Coon Rapids) ran 8.57 Kara Hedin (JR-Dassel/Dassel-Cokato) ran 8.70 and both missed the finals. The Toms' 4x400 relay team of Tish Dusich (FR-Ely), Emily Haley (SR-Chippewa Falls, Wis.), Hedin and Heidi Vogel ran 3:58.61 and missed the finals.
