Toms win 6 men, 6 women's track events at UST Invite

Sophomore Roman Cress won the 100- and 200-meter dashes on the men's side and junior Kara Hedin won the long jump and triple jump on the women's side to highlight the St. Thomas showings at Saturday's UST Invitational Track & Field Championships at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.

The men's team race wasn't scored. The Tommie women took first in a field of six full women's teams with 193.8 points to 154.6 for runner-up Minnesota-Duluth; 106 for MSU, Mankato; 89.5 for St. Cloud State; 69.5 for Central of Venezuela; and 53 for UW-Stout.

Cress lowered his school record in the 100 meters with a time of 10.49, an NCAA automatic qualifying time for the May national outdoor meet. Three weeks earlier, Cress ran 10.52 to break the 1993 UST record of 10.53 set by Leonard Jones.

Cress also won the 200 Saturday in 22.05. UST junior Jeremy Heckman was second in both the 100 (10.63) and the 200 (22.40). Heckman's 100 time surpassed the NCAA provisional standard and was just .02 of a second off the automatic standard of 10.61.

Another NCAA provisional standard was reached in the hammer, where UST senior Joe Bilek threw 169-10 for third place.

Other UST men's winners were senior Greg Kaiser in the javelin (198-1); freshman Justin Hall in the 400 (49.11); junior Ryan Kollmann in the 1,500 (3:56.93); and the 4x400 relay (3:24.18).

Other top-three finishers were Craig Benson, second in the 110 hurdles (15.78); Ryan Quinn, third in the 110 hurdles (15.82); Mark Bates, second in the 400 hurdles (55.45); and Andrew Kiselius, second in the triple jump (42-6 1-4.

For the women, Hedin jumped 36-1 1-2 to win the triple jump and 16-5 1-4 to claim the long jump. She also was second to teammate Katie Bestul in the 100 hurdles -- Hedin ran 15.28 behind Bestul's 14.94.

Heidi Vogel won the 200 (26.65) and was third in the 100 (12.74); Emily Menden won the 400 hurdles (67.37); Sara Diercks won the javelin in 118-3; Katie Arnes won the high jump in an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 5-5; and UST also won the 4x400 relay (4:02.71) with Jill Ylonen, Heidi Vogel, Carie Muntifering and Emily Haley.

Other UST women's top-three pacers were Kelly Faris, second in the 5,000 (18:22.12) and the 3,000 (10:43.70); Ylonen, third in the 200 (27.40); Tish Dusich, second in the 800 (2:19.36); Carleen Andert, third in the 3000 (10:50.65); Mary Pulling, third in the 400 hurdles (69.64); and Haley, second in the long jump (15-6 3-4).

Next Saturday, the UST men compete at the Macalester Invite and the women run in the St. Olaf Invite.
