May 18, 2000
The UST women had three strong provisional performances Wednesday. Junior Kelly Faris ran 10:08.65 in the 3,000, just .11 of a second off the automatic time; freshman Tish Dusich ran 63.85 in the 400 hurdles, just.21 of a second off the automatic standard; and Kara Hedin improved her provisional mark in the triple jump as she sailed 37-6.5.

For the UST men, junior 1,500-meter runner Ryan Kollmann and the Tommie men's 4x100 relay team met NCAA automatic qualifying standards Wednesday at the UST Track & Field Last Chance Qualifying Meet.

Kollmann clocked 3:51.01, the metric equivalent of a 4:08 mile, to edge U of M unattached runner Joey Corr, who ran 3:51.21. Kollmann was fifth in the NCAA outdoor 1,500 in 1998 and second in the NCAA indoor 5,000 last March.

The Toms' 4x100 relay team of Nick Stahly, Justin Hall, Jeremy Heckman and Roman Cress ran a season-best 41.31, just .34 off the school record. That time ranks UST sixth in the nation. UST has placed fourth and fifth in the NCAA 4x100 the last two seasons.

UST junior Dan Draine just missed an NCAA automatic clocking in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as he ran 9:12.49, just off the 9:12.44 automatic standard. That's the 14th-best time thus far and should be good enough for him to run at nationals.

Joe Bilek improved his NCAA provisional mark in the hammer with a throw of 173-8, and Chris Milton hit an NCAA provisional mark in the pole vault at 15-2 1-4.

Two other MIAC athletes in the meet hit automatic times -- Macalester's Liz Connors in the 3,000 (10:06.83) and Carleton's Carolina Stuart in the 400 hurdles (63.23). A few others hit or improved their NCAA provisional marks.

A few Tommies may compete in one of two remaining last chance meets this weekend -- at the U of M or at UW-LaCrosse. The NCAA Division III outdoor meet is scheduled for May 25-27 in Naperville, Ill.
