MIAC track qualifiers for NCAA Championships

St. Thomas has 11 men in nine events and six women in six events competing in this weekend's NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships in Naperville, Ill. Only two of the 17 athletes are seniors.

The men's team qualified its 4x400 relay at last Saturday's LaCrosse Last Chance Meet in 3:14.65, the seventh best time in the nation and just .40 of a second off off the school record. Mark Bates, Justin Hall, Jeremy Heckman and Andrew Hilliard comprise that quartet -- Heckman is a junior and the other three are freshmen. UST also is seeded sixth in the 4x100 relay with junior Nick Stahly, Hall, Heckman and soph Roman Cress.

Cress and Heckman are both qualified in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

An ankle injury may keep UST senior All-American Greg Kaiser out of the javelin. He placed eighth in 1999 at nationals and has the third best throw in 2000 at 207-6 recorded May 12 at the MIAC Championships. But he twisted his ankle in that meet and hasn't been able to throw since.

Other UST men's qualifiers are junior All-American Ryan Kollmann in the 1,500; junior Dan Draine in the 3,000 steeplechase; freshman Craig Benson in the 110 hurdles; and senior Joe Bilek in the hammer.

For the women, junior Katie Bestul and soph Emily Menden are in the 100 hurdles; junior Kara Hedin is in the triple jump; junior Katie Arnes is in the high jump; junior Kelly Faris will run both the 10,000 and 3,000; and freshman Jill Ylonen is in the 100 meters.

The Tommies are hoping to match or improve on their seventh-place team finish in the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.
