Women's Track edges UWEC for Border Battle title

The St. Thomas women's indoor track and field team outscored UW-Eau Claire by four points to win Saturday's four-team Border Battle hosted by St. Olaf.

The Tommies won nine events and had seven runner-up placings and scored 189 points to outscore UW-Eau Claire (185) St. Olaf (144.3) and UW-Stout (94.6).

Heidi Vogel and Jill Ylonen were each double winners. Vogel won the triple jump (34-10 1-2) and 55 dash (7.42) and placed second in the long jump (16-8 3-4). Ylonen won the long jump (17-1 1-4) and 200 (26.91) and was third in the 55 (7.55).

The Toms also won the 4x400 relay (4:02.79) and got firsts from Karolien Bastiaens in the pole vault (12-0), Teresa Smock in the 600 (1:38.23), Nicole Gurgel in the 3,000 (10:44) and Tish Dusich in the 1000 (3:01.77).

Bastiaens, the 2002 MIAC indoor and outdoor champion, broke MIAC and St. Thomas records as she became the first women's vaulter to clear 12-0. That also met the automatic qualifying standard for the March 14-15 national meet in Greencastle, Ind.

Crystal Baloun took second in the weight throw (42-11 1-2) and shot put (37-9 1-4); Kristal Grigsby was second in the high jump (5-2 1-4); Molly Bauman was second in the 55 hurdles (9.04); Mollie Hupp was second in the 600 (1:38.33); and the Toms took second in the 4x200 relay (1:48.80).

Thirds were scored by Megan Seibel in the long jump (15-8 3-4); Brigid Power in the 1,500 (5:03.56); Jenny Borofka in the 1,000 (3:15.32) and Kristen Winchell in the 800 (2:29.64).

Fourths were scored by Theresa Meath in the long jump (15-8 1-4), Mary McKee in the 400 (62.29) and Grigsby in the 200 (27.84).

Fifths were scored by Ellem Crow in the shot put (36-4 1-4); Erin Ranta in the long jump (15-6 1-4); and Grigsby in the 55 (7.70).

Sixths were scored by Crow in the weight throw (35-10 3-4); Seibel in the triple jump (32-2 1-4); Andretta Colley in the long jump (14-11 1-2); Beth Magnuson in the 5,000 (19:59.28); Bastiaens in the 55 (7.85); and Brittany Dusich in the 600 (1:50.56).

The Toms compete Saturday at the University of Minnesota Invitational. They will compete in less than three weeks at the MIAC Championships at St. Olaf.
