Joe Sweeney gets MIAC Coach of Year Award

St. Thomas women's coach Joe Sweeney was named MIAC women's Coach of the Year for the indoor season after he led UST to the team championship for the 16th time in the 19-year history of the event. Sweeney has guided Tommie teams to 48 conference team crowns in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track in his 23-year career.

St. Thomas senior Heidi Vogel was among those who received votes for the women's Most Outstanding Performer award. Vogel had a hand in 39 points and she won the triple jump, took second in the long jump, ran on the winning 4x400 relay and also placed third in the 200 dash and fourth in the 55 dash.

St. Thomas sophomore Carson Glad was the co-recipient of the men's Most Outstanding Performer award at the 2003 MIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships in a vote of MIAC coaches.

Glad had a hand in 34 points as he won the 200 and 400 dashes, placed fifth in the 55 dash, and anchored the Tommies' meet-record 4x400 relay to victory. Glad will compete in two events at this weekend's Division III national meet in Greencastle, Ind. Friday he will run prelims in the 400 meters and the 4x400 relay.
