Women's Track third at Drake Relays' 4x800

The St. Thomas women's track team sent five of its top athletes to the Friday-Saturday Drake Relays, and the rest of the squad went to Saturday's Macalester Invitational.

At Drake, the 4x800 relay team of Tish Dusich, Brigid Power, Mollie Hupp and Teresa Smock clocked 9:05.66 for third place. Division II North Dakota State won in 8:47 and Division III Ithaca ran 9:04. Tommie All-American pole vaulter Karolien Bastiaens cleared 11-0 1/4 for 29th in the Drake pole vault.

At Macalester, the Toms won the final event, the 4x400 relay, to edge St. Ben's 135.5-135 for the team championship.

The Tommies won the 4x400 (3:58.72) and 4x100 (49.13); was second in the 4x800 relay (10:20:32); won the long jump with Jill Ylonen (5.27m), won the triple jump with Kristal Grigsby (11.13m); won the 3,000 with Nicole Gurgel (10:57.23).

Second places went to Heidi Vogel in the 100 (12.57); Christie Thames in the pole vault (3.16m); and Grigsby in the long jump (5.21m).

Thirds went to Chelsea Guettinger in the 3,000 (11:07.14); Ylonen in the 400 dash (60.09); Vogel in the triple jump (10.71m); and Erika Wetzel in the javelin (34.51m).

Fourths went to Mary McKee in the 400 dash (61.49); Beth Magnuson in the 10,000 (44:14); and Molly Bauman in the 400 hurdles (66.54). Ellen Crow was sixth in the shot put (11.47m).

UST will host the Tommie Twilight meet Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
