Women's Track sees two of oldest school records fall
May 19, 2003
St. Thomas freshman Mollie Hupp broke a 20-year-old school record in the 800 meters and hit an automatic qualifying time for the Division III national meet at Friday's UST Last Chance meet at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
The Tommies also broke an 18-year-old school record in the 4x400 as it improved its provisional qualifying time to 3:48.14. Hupp, Smock, Heidi Vogel and Jill Ylonen comprised the relay, which now ranks fourth in the nation.
In the 800, Hupp placed first in 2:11.02 -- a time that ranks third-best in Division III. It broke the 1983 record set by former NCAA champion Rose McIlrath.
Teammate Teresa Smock has run 2:12.39 earlier this spring and ranks sixth nationally in the 800.
The Toms also won the 4x100 relay and improved its provisional time to 48.37 with Karolien Bastiaens, Vogel, Alicia Wolff and Ylonen.
Bastiaens also won the pole vault (11-6 1/2).
The other top-two Tommie finishers Friday were Vogel in the triple jump (34-0) and Ylonen in the long jump (17-9 3/4).
The women's probable NCAA qualifiers for this week's Division III Championships in Canton N.Y. are Hupp and Smock in the 800; Bastiaens in the pole vault; and 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
