Track's Brigid Power wins NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

March 8, 2005
St. Thomas distance runner Brigid Power (SR-Eden Prairie) has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. She's one of 56 fall sports senior athletes from Division I, II and III to receive the prestigious honor, which includes a $7,500 stipend for graduate studies.

A Secondary Education major with a 3.94 grade-point average, Power qualified for nationals in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track in 2003-04. She earned All-American honors with an eighth-place national finish in the 1,500 meters last May.

In MIAC Championships competition, Power has had six firsts and three seconds in relay or individual events. The Toms have won all five conference team crowns when she's competed since 2003.

Power also will compete in the mile at this week's Division III indoor national meet. Last weekend, she won two events and had a hand in 32 points to help the Tommies win the conference team championship.

Of the 88 conferences in the three NCAA divisions, seven of the 56 fall honorees are from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Joining Power are Concordia's Nick Myran (cross country), Jessica Walden (volleyball) and Jordan Talge (football); Bethel's Matt Wassink (football); Gustavus' Rachel Batalden (volleyball); and Carleton's Katie Freeman (volleyball).
