Kristal Grigsby wins NCAA indoor long jump
March 11, 2005
St. Thomas junior Kristal Grigsby of Minneapolis won her second NCAA individual championship Friday in Bloomington, Ill., as she soared a career-best 19-2 1/2 to win the long jump and the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Teammate Andretta Colley placed fourth in 18-5 1/4 to give the Tommie women 15 team points. That's good for second place behind UW-Oshkosh (22) going into the last day.
UST senior Brigid Power had the second fastest time in the mile prelims Friday evening (5.02.14) and made the 10-person finals. Both Grigsby and Colley will compete in Saturday's triple jump.
Grigsby won the 2004 NCAA outdoor long jump title. At the 2004 indoor meet she placed fifth in the triple jump but was 10th in the long jump in 17-0 1/2 and missed the nine-person finals.
Grigsby's twin sister Shea'na, a junior at Carthage (Wis.) College, is also seeded first in the 55-meter hurdles and qualifed with the second fastest time Friday.
