Molly Bauman, Christina Chapman, Kristal Grigsby and Alicia Wolff not only ran an automatic NCAA qualifying time but came within two seconds of a school record.
UST also ran the seventh-best 4x100 time in the nation as it won that relay in 47.58, just .33 off the school record. Bauman, Chapman, Andretta Colley and Grigsby comprised that relay.
Grigsby jumped 5-2 1-2 in the high jump, and Colley sailed 37-0 1-2 in the triple jump -- neither were season bests.
On the men's side, UST placed second in the 4x400 in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 3:13.56 -- the fifth best time in Division III this season. Four other Tommies competed in hopes of improving their chances to reach next week's national meet -- sophomore P.J. Theisen clocked 53.40 in the 400 hurdles and ranks 14th; senior Dave Diercks threw a career-best 192-6 in the javelin which is tied for 13th; junior Derek Marks threw 163-9 and is 13th in the discus; and junior Peter Rosholt threw 171-11, under his previous best in the hammer.
The NCAA Championships will be held May 26-28 in Waverly, Iowa, hosted by Wartburg. The Tommies should send at least a dozen athletes.
