Deb Thometz Leyden graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a BA in 1983. As a student, Thometz Leyden was the Tommies' first female national champion as she won the 1981 AIAW Cross Country Nationals. She joined Taffy Ostrom as the first women inducted into the University of St. Thomas Athletics Hall of Fame. Thometz Leyden ran on the University's 1981 and 1982 national champion cross country teams. As a senior, she was the cross country national runner-up and the NCAA 10,000 meter champion in track. Her 33:50 time in the 10,000 meters still stands as an NCAA Championships record. Her track 3K, 5K, and 10K best times all rank in the top six in Division III history, and she still holds the four oldest school records in St. Thomas track history, all set in 1983.
