John Tauer graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a BA in 1995. As a student, Tauer was a CoSIDA Academic All-American and NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient. He was a starter for the Tommies' first men's Final Four qualifier, and helped St. Thomas win three MIAC titles, posting an 88-26 record in his era. As a senior, Tauer led the Tommies to a 27-0 start, including the first 20-0 MIAC finish by a men's team. He was a two-time All-MIAC player, with 1,219 points and 482 rebounds on his career. His 207 career three-point baskets are second most at St. Thomas and sixth most in the MIAC. He is now the Tommie men's basketball head coach, becoming the first MIAC coach to lead a team to a regular-season conference title in each of his first six seasons. Tauer brought the Tommies to a national championship in 2016, beating four top-ten teams on their way to grab a national title.
