St. Thomas senior Ryan Zimmerman on Monday was named MIAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week. It was his first conference Pitcher of the Week honor of his career.
Zimmerman recorded a one-hit shutout of Concordia in Friday's 6-0 road win in Moorhead to help the Toms claim a split after an earlier 2-1 extra-inning loss in game one.
In winning his third consecutive start, Zimmerman struck out seven and now leads the MIAC in strikeouts with 43 in 31 innings. He retired 17 of the last 19 batters he faced as he lowered his season ERA to 2.68. He allowed a single, a walk and a hit batter but coaxed two ground balls that were converted into double plays as he claimed his 13th career victory.
The Eden Prairie native, an All-Region honoree in 2017, worked out of the bullpen as a sophomore but has been a key starter over his last two seasons. In 2017, he had two postseason complete games, including a 7-2 win over No. 2-ranked UW-Whitewater, with a 2.58 ERA and 119 strikeouts in 116.1 innings.
Zimmerman likely will be on the mound Wednesday when the Tommies (10-10 overall, 5-3 MIAC) open their home season against Hamline with a 2:30 p.m. twinbill at Koch Diamond.
