Doug Lichtenberger joined Tommie Football in the spring of 2019. He will serve as the Purple's special teams coordinator, and also assist with defensive backs.
A San Diego native and former Cal Poly four-year letterwinner (offensive lineman) as a player from 1993-97, he's starting his 20th season assisting on a college football staff. That includes coaching and administrative experience in eight different colleges or university programs, starting in 1999 as a graduate coach at the University of Idaho.
Lichtenberger came to Minnesota to coach for the 2018 football season. He was quarterbacks coach for the merged SMB program that won the Class 4A state title with a 13-0 record.
He previously served as the University of Nevada's Director of Football and Recruiting Operations in 2016, his second stint there. He worked as a graduate assistant at Nevada in 2000, which helped launch his coaching and administrative career. He also had a nine-year run at Tulane University. During his stint with Tulane, Lichtenberger saw position coaching experience with the offensive line, tight ends and linebackers, while also serving as a recruiting coordinator and special teams coordinator. From 2012-14, Lichtenberger was an assistant athletic director at Tulane, overseeing the football program.
Prior to Tulane, Lichtenberger served as an administrative assistant at Auburn. Lichtenberger also served as an offensive line coach at UC Davis in 2005; a tackles and tight ends coach at Ohio University in 2004; and as an offensive coordinator and QB coach at Carleton College from 2001-03.
Lichtenberger received his bachelor’s degree after majoring in Liberal Studies in 1998 at Cal Poly. He went on receive a Master’s degree in Recreation in 2000 at Idaho.
