Senior Ryan Boll had 18 points and a career-high 15 rebounds and sank two free throws with 31 seconds to go for a 71-68 lead in Friday's night's 73-68 Tommie men's basketball victory over Dickinson (Pa.) in the season-opening game for both teams in Marietta, Ohio.
The Tommies overcame 15 turnovers and shot 50 percent from the floor, including 8-of-18 from 3-point range. UST posted a 42-25 reboundng advantage.
The game was tied 31-31 at half, but UST used an 18-4 run to build a 13-point lead with 10:43 to play. Dickinson countered with a 20-9 run to pull within 65-63 with under 4:00 left.
St. Thomas made 7-of-8 free throws in the final 2:41, including a pair by Boll to push the lead to 71-68 with 31 seconds left in regulation. Dickinson had a potential tying 3-point attempt bounce high off the rim and it fouled UST on the rebound with :01 remaining.
St. Thomas pays host Marietta on Saturday night.
Hannah Spaulding had 18 points and 14 rebounds as No. 3-ranked St. Thomas opened its 2017-18 women's basketball season with Friday night's 75-53 win over Connecticut College in Skidmore, N.Y.
St. Thomas had a 44-28 rebounding advantage and heped forced 20 turnovers and limit CC to 27-percent shooting from the field. UST's starters outscored CC 44-22.
Elsa Anderson scored 13 points, freshman Kaia Porter scored 10 and Maddie Wolkow chipped in nine points.
UST plays Bowdoin Saturday at 3 p.m.
Allie Borgstrom scored a go-ahead goal in the second period to lead the host Tommies past St. Catherine 2-1 in MIAC action in Mendota Heights. No. 9-ranked UST (6-2 overall, 2-1 MIAC) plays a rematch at Drake Arena Saturday at 1 p.m.
