The 25th-annual Johnny Tauer youth basketball camps are getting ready for a busy summer of 2018.
A St. Paul native and star athlete at Cretin-Derham Hall and the University of St. Thomas, Tauer is in his eighth season as St. Thomas head basketball coach, and 19th year teaching Psychology and coaching basketball at St. Thomas.
His current team is ranked No. 5 in the country and owns a 21-2 record, with the 21 wins being the longest current winning streak in in Division III. This week, the Purple clinched at least a tie of its 13th MIAC title in the past 14 seasons, highlighted by national championships in 2011 and 2016. Tauer is a two-time National Coach of the Year (2013 and 2016), and has the second-highest winning percentage among Division III coaches nationally.
Tauer will hold camps for boys and girls, from beginners to travel players, with a focus on skill development, teamwork, and fun. There are two residential camps at the University of St. Thomas, and several day camps throughout the summer.
Camps will take place at some of the state's finest basketball facilities, all in the Twin Cities:
- University of St. Thomas' new Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex;
- St. Thomas' McCarthy Gym;
- Cretin-Derham Hall High school
- plus half-day and beginners' camps at St. Paul's Nativity Grade School.
