St. Thomas junior Pete Sienko on Tuesday was named MIAC Athlete of the Week in men's golf, the first award of 2016-17 in the sport.
Sienko shot 69 on Sunday's final round -- the second-best score among 104 players competing -- to help St. Thomas share second place among 18 teams in the two-day, 36-hole Augsburg tournament. Sienko took second by one stroke in the medalist race at 146, and topped 77 other MIAC players from nine schools.
In 30 career rounds with the Tommies, this was Sienko's third sub-70 round and ninth under-par round. He has an MIAC-best 73.0 stroke average over the last two seasons. In 10 multi-day tournaments with the Tommies, Sienko is averaging 71.6 on the final round.
Sienko placed 16th at the NCAA Championships last May, helping his team tie for fifth. He now has eight top-four individual finishes with St. Thomas.
Sienko placed seventh in the 2014 Minnesota state high school meet for Spring Lake Park after rounds of 75 and 72 at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids. He was a scholarship player in 2014-15 at North Dakota State but transferred to UST in summer 2015.
No. 3-ranked St. Thomas will send its top players to next weekend's UW-Eau Claire tournament.
