Pete's Elite: His 65 leads Men's Golf win

Senior Pete Sienko shot a seven-under-par 65 with seven birdies and 11 pars on Monday for medalist honors to lead No. 4-ranked St. Thomas to an eight-stroke win over No. 12-ranked St. John's at the Johnnies' 36-hole Klinkner Invitational in Sauk Centre.

It marked the Tommies' third consecutive team tournament victory of the 2017-18 season including two last fall at the MIACs and the Golfweek event in Florida.

St. Thomas started the day in fourth place, five strokes back, but shot 281 on Monday. Sienko shot 71-65/136 for first among 40 players. He topped runner-up Sam Olson of SJU by four strokes and took his third career medalist honor.

Emmet Herb shot 68 and finished tied for fifth. Shane Sienko shot 72. Owen Nowicki and Riley Gannon each shot 76s.

From the Tommies' No. 2 team, Peder Larson shot 69 and placed ninth, and Matt Mellin shot 70 and tied for 15th place.

St. Thomas and St. John's play a match-play event on Friday, and then compete again next weekend in the SJU Spring tourney.

 

Sunday story

St. Thomas Men's Golf shot 295 on Sunday and is just five strokes out of first place heading into Monday's final round at the 36-hole St. John's Klinkner Invite.

Augsburg (290) leads St. John's and UW-Eau Claire (291) by one, and St. Thomas I (295) by two with 18 holes to go. Bethel (303), St. John's II (306) and St. Thomas II (315) rounded out Sunday's scores.

Pete Sienko shot 71 and Riley Gannon had a 74 to lead the Tommies. Emmet Herb and Owen Nowicki each shot 75s.
