Mellin sharp, Men's Golf takes sixth of 17

Tommie Men's Golf had two teams placed sixth and ninth out of 17 teams at the SJU Spring Invite. Thwe two-dy, 54-hole event was contested in Monticello and St. Cloud.

Matt Mellin placed third in a field of 96 players with rounds of 72-68-75/215.

Peder Larson (73-73-79) from the first team and Ben Kisla (73-77-75) from the No. 2 team tied for 13th with scores of 225.

The Tommies' No. 1 player, junior Emmet Herb, was held out of competition this weekend.

The Toms will compete next weekend at Gustavus' Bobby Krieg Invite.



No. 24-ranked Tommie Men's Golf is looking to compete in each of the next two weekends as a tune-up for the May 14-17 NCAA Championships in Kentucky.

Coach Scott Proshek's team has played just one round over the last month since returning from spring break. Weather permitting, they will compete Saturday in an 18-hole meet in Monticello, Minn., and Sunday in a 36-hole test in St. Cloud, both hosted by St. John's.

The annual Gustavus Bobby Krieg Invite has been reset for May 3-4 in LeSeuer.

Thanks to its victory last October in the 54-hole MIAC Championships, St. Thomas has secured a spot in the 42-team national tournament field in mid-May. That's the sixth time in eight years St. Thomas wil send a team to the NCAA Championships. The best scoring squads after the May 14-15 opening rounds will advance to the final two days after a 36-hole cut.

Tommie junior Emmet Herb has the MIAC's second-best season scoring average -- 72.3 stroke average for 17 rounds.
