Six receive special awards at Men's Soccer banquet

MIAC champion St. Thomas Men's Soccer handed out six awards at Sunday's postseason banquet:

  • Freshman Halvor Houg received the Most Improved Award;
  • Freshman Sam Holton received the Newcomer of the Year Awad (on and off the field impact);
  • Senior Kevin Van Lieshout received the Hard Hat Award (led by example, hardest working and most dedicated to soccer specific strength and fitness);
  • Junior Will Kidd received the Joe Flood Award (represents the program with the highest level of commitment, academic excellence and sportsmanship);
  • Sophomore Andrew Shirley received the Sam Koch Team-First Award (player who consistently displayed a "team first" mentality with hard work and a positive attitude on and off the field);
  • Senior Shae Bottum received the Team MVP Award.

Coach Jon Lowery's Tommies repeated as MIAC champions and reached the NCAA playoff quarterfinal round in a 22-2 finish.

  • Have won 32 of last 36 games dating back to the 2016 season;
  • 11-2 postseason record in 2016, 2017;
  • 17 consecutive home victories including (13-0 in 2017);
  • MIAC regular-season and playoff record of 21-1-2 over the last two seasons;
  • Three straight MIAC Playoff championship game appearances, winning the last two;
  • Outscored 2017 opponents by a 56-13 margin;
  • Shae Bottum broke a 30-year-old UST assist record with 15;
  • Six sophomore, junior or senior players posted a 3.70 or higher grade-point average, topped by Drew Winkoski's perfect 4.00.
