St. Thomas Men's Track and Field won two events and has opened up a healthy lead after the opening day of the 2019 MIAC Championships contested on its campus at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
With seven of 22 events completed, St. Thomas leads with 89.5 points followed closest by Gustavus (43), St. Olaf (29.5) and Hamline (28).
The final 15 events will be held Saturday. Field events start at 2 p.m., with running finals starting at 3 p.m.
St. Thomas scored 29 points in the long jump from five athletes with a 1-2-4-5-7 finish from Conor White (23-6), Adam Rikkers (23-2 3-4), Josh Prater (22-10 1-2), Nick Spann (22-5 3-4) and Kaleb Keener (21-10 3-4).
Three throwers contibuted 27 points in two events. In the discus, David Danhauer (153-8), Eric Holst (149-9) and Gage O'Brien (145-2) placed 2-4-6. In the hammer, Holst (193-5), Danhauer (165-10) and O'Brien (163-2) placed 2-7-8.
In the 10,000, George McGivern made his career debut in the 25-lap race and placed seventh in 32:25.74.
