St. Thomas men's teams in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field placed 11th in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's annual Program of the Year standings.
North Central (Ill.) topped the competition with eight points (low score wins), based on actual team places at the three NCAA championship meets.
UW-Eau Claire, Washington (Mo.) and UW-La Crosse placed 2-3-4. Nine of the top 15 institutions are from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa or Missouri.
The Tommies scored 74 points, one behind 10th-place Middlebury.
St. Thomas coach Pete Wareham's cross country team placed 30th at the national meet last November, and returns most of his top eight.
Coach Steve Mathre's indoor track and field team placed 12th at nationals in March with two high placewinners. Last week Mathre's outdoor team placed 31st at nationals with two placewinners.
Senior Eric Holst was an indoor NCAA champion in the weight throw and outdoor NCAA runner-up in the hammer throw. Senior Nick Spann (indoor long jump) and Senior David Danhauer (outdoor shot put) also won All-America honors after scoring at nationals.
