Thursday Wrap: Tschida hits milestone in Florida

Down to its last out, St. Thomas used Rachel Suter's two-run, two-out single in the top of the seventh inning with Thursday's 3-2 cpmeback win over Loras (Iowa) in Clermont, Fla. Hayley Dunning moved to 7-1 in pitching on the season as she won her sixth consecutive start.

The No. 20-ranked Tommies scored an 8-3 win over UW-Stevens Point earlier in the day.

St. Thomas (10-4) has won six in a row and nine of its last 10 games. It is scheduled to open MIAC play next Wednesday at home with two games against Bethel.

In the Pointer win, Jenna Bromen doubled twice and drove in three runs, and Dana Connelly, Jenna Beeso, Sammy Hogan and Elise Barnes each had two hits.

Seven different Toms had a hit against Loras. Dunning gave up a two-out single in the seventh inning but got a ground out to end the game. Loras left the bases loded twice.

In 14 games thus far -- against a schedule that has included games with eight nationally-ranked games -- the Tommies are batting .322 and scoring nearly seven runs a game.

Tschida joins select D-III 900-win club

Earlier this week, Coach John Tschida reached 900 wins on his 24-year coaching career at St. Mary's and St. Thomas.

The winningest coach in NCAA softball history with an .840 win clip, Tschida has led Cardinal and Tommies teams to three NCAA championships. He will head into April with a 902-172 coaching record. That includes a 694-128 record (.844) in 18 seasons with the Tommies.

Tschida is just the third active NCAA Division III coach to surpass 900 victories, joining 34-year Central (Iowa) coach George Wares and 31-year Alma (Mich.) coach Denny Griffin.

In his first 17 years at St. Thomas, Tschida's Tommie teams have won 98 postseason games and have a 92-percent win clip against conference opponents.
