Softball starts fast, gets shutout win

Hayley Dunning and Sammy Hogan combined on a four-hit shutout to lead No. 7-ranked St. Thomas to a 6-0 win over St. Olaf in Friday's opening game of the MIAC Softball playoffs at UST's South Field.

The top-seed Tommies (33-6) advance to play Saturday at 11 a.m. against No. 3-seed St. Catherine (26-13), a 4-2 winner over No. 2-seed St. Ben's.

The Oles (23-17) play a 1:30 p.m. elimination game Saturday aganst CSB. They left five on base and hit into a double play.

Hogan came on in the sixth inning with two on base and one out and got the last five outs for a save.

Dunning (21-2) has won her last 12 starts.

Elise Barnes and Dana Connelly each had two hits and two RBI, and Jenna Beeso added two hits. UST scored twice in the first inning and never looked back.
