Softball falls 3-1 to start Super Regional

No. 7-ranked Tommie Softball dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 16-ranked Luther Friday in the openign game of a best-of-three series Friday in Decorah, Iowa.

The Tommies (38-7) had an eight-game win streak halted. They need to win Saturday's 1 p.m. game and win again at 3:30 p.m. to take the series. Luther (39-6) needs just one win to advance to next week's eight-team national tournament.

Luther pitcher Samantha Bratland set down the first 14 Toms before Jenna Beeso doubled in the fifth inning. UST trailed 3-0 when Chase Shortly had an RBI double in the sixth inning. UST stranded Beeso at second in the fifth, then left two runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Sammy Hogan pitched a complete game for the Toms. She allowed two earned runs in the seven-inning loss.
