Softball season ends one win shy of nationals

St. Thomas Softball stayed alive Saturday with an 11-8 win to even its Super Regional series 1-1 with Luther in Decorah, Iowa.

But the host Norse won the 3:45 p.m. rematch and took the best-of-three series with a 10-4 victory to advance to next week's eight-team national tournament.

The Tommies (39-8) pounded 17 hits in game one and 12 in game two, and left 20 runners on base in both games. Melissa Barry and Dana Connelly each had five hits on the day.

UST fell behind 6-0 after two innings of the deciding game. They climbed back to a 6-4 deficit, but Luther added four more runs. UST left two runners on in the sixth and left the bases loaded in the seventh. Luther (40-9) hit two home runs in the game to help pull away.

In the opener, Sammy Hogan had a three-run triple in the first inning, and also got the pitching win as she allowed four earned runs in five innings of middle relief.

The Tommies tied for ninth in the nation for the second consecutive year after sharing seventh place in 2016 and taking third place in 2014.
