Softball walks off to cap 4-0 weekend at Rochester Dome


Junior Kierstin Anderson-Glass threw a six-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and no walks and No. 7-ranked St. Thomas Softball scored a 9-0 win over Grinnell (Iowa) in Sunday afternoon play at the Rochester Dome.

The Tommies (4-0) came back with a walk-off 6-4 defeat of Carroll (Wis.) to close out the weekend. In Sunday's two victories, Melissa Barry went 7-for-8, and Chase Shortly went 4-for-7 with five RBI.

St. Thomas fell behind Carroll 4-0 in the top of the first inning, and still trailed 4-3 into the final at-bat. Kristin McGonigal walked, stole second, took third on an error and scored on Elise Barnes' ground-rule double to tie the game at 4-4. Barry singled and took second, and Shortly's ground-rule double scored the final two winning runs.

Freshman Megan Baniecke pitched four scoreless innings in relief for her first college win.

Jenna Beeso had two doubles and drove in four runs in the Grinnell win. Shortly went 2-for-3 with three RBI; and Barnes and Barry each had three hits.

In the four Rochester games over two days, Shortly went 10-for-14 with 12 RBI; Barry went 11-for-15 with nine runs and five RBI; Barnes went 10-for-15 with 10 runs and four RBI.
