Softball sweeps into sole possession of MIAC lead


Elise Barnes had five hits on the day and Melissa Barry added four as No. 11-ranked Tommie Softball ran its win streak to 11 with Sunday's 10-2, 5-3 sweep of visiting St. Mary's in conference play at South Field.

St. Thomas (26-4 overall, 12-2 MIAC) moved past St. Catherine into the conference lead with eight games to go.

The Tommies received 22 hits from 10 different players on the doubleheader and had no errors. St. Thomas ranks second in Diviison III fielding percentage at .981.

Jenna Bromen went 3-for-3 with a home run and Barnes went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles in game one.

In game two, St. Mary's took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Tommies answered with two-out two-RBI hits from Dana Connelly and Jenna Beeso.

Sam Birling added a solo home run in the third inning.

Kierstin Anderson-Glass received both pitching wins. She retired all nine batters she faced in game one and left with a 7-0 lead after three innings. She came on in the first inning of game two and pitched through the fourth. Freshman Kendall Hopkins worked the final three innings and allowed no runs for the save.

The Toms continue a busy stretch with a Monday home doubleheader against Augsburg.
