Softball splits, stays in MIAC lead

Junior Elise Barnes ran her home-run streak to four games, but No. 4-ranked Tommie Softball split a pair of home MIAC contests Tuesday against Macalester at South Field.

The Toms won 8-0 in six innings, but fell 4-3 in game two. The second game ended St. Thomas' 17-game season win streak.

St. Thomas (33-5 overall, 17-3 MIAC) can win the MIAC regular-season title with one win Saturday in a doubleheader with against St. Catherine. The Toms also can secure a tie on Wednesday if SCU loses one in a twinbill against Macalester (15-21, 7-11).

Second-place St. Catherine (14-4) also split with Augsburg on Tuesday. The Wildcats play two Wednesday against Macalester and two Saturday at St. Thomas.

Over her last seven games, Barnes is batting .560 with 14 hits in 25 at-bats with 10 RBI and four home runs. On Tuesday, she went 4-for-7 with a walk, two homers, four RBI and five runs to raise her season average to .427.

Kierstin Anderson-Glass threw five shutout innings with six strikeouts and no walks in the opener. She also got the last five outs with three strike outs in game two.

The Purple fell behind 4-0 in game two. They loaded the bases with none out in the sixth inning, but scored just one and stranded three. Barnes' two-run homer with one out in the seventh cut the deficit to 4-3, but a ground out and fly out ended the game.
