Junior achievement: Barnes, KAG lead 1-0 Softball playoff win

Junior Elise Barnes' two-out triple in the third inning set up the game's only run and junior Kierstin Anderson-Glass shined in pitching and fielding to lead No. 4-ranked Tommie Softball to a 1-0 win Friday over St. Olaf in the opening game of the MIAC Playoffs at St. Thomas' South Field.

Third-seed Hamline scored a 7-0 win over second-seed St. Catherine in the day's other semifinal-round game on a three-hit shutout by Alex Malloy.

Hamline (24-15) plays St. Thomas Saturday at 11 a.m. in the tournament winners' bracket.

St. Olaf plays St. Catherine in an 11 a.m. elimination game. A second elimination game is set Saturday for 4 p.m.

The top-seed Tommies (36-5) and fourth-seed Oles (26-13 each had four hits and rode strong pitching and defense. There were no walks by either pitcher, and the Toms turned two double plays to erase two of the Oles' five baserunners.

Barnes tripled and scored on a wild pitch.

In the top of the seventh for St. Olaf, a one-out hard liner off the pitcher by Hannah Matthies went for an infied hit. Emily Carr looped a double just inside the line in left field to put two in scoring position.

Abby Grismer's hard liner was caught by Anderson-Glass, who threw to third to double off the lead runner and end the game.

St. Olaf ace Julie Graf struck out four and allowed the one run and four hits. Anderson Glass allowed four hits and no runs with two strike outs.

St. Thomas has won 21 of its last 22 contests and improved to 11-2 at home.
