Rick Canton is back for his fifth season with the University of St. Thomas women’s basketball coaching staff in 2018-19. Canton brings over 38 years of coaching experience at the high school and collegiate level, including two stints with the Tommies.
He is a graduate of Kenyon High School, and went on to play collegiate basketball at both Augsburg and later at Luther College, where he attained his degree in Physical Education and Coaching. Upon graduation, Canton went on to attain a Master Degree in Sports Administration from Mankato State University.
Coach Canton comes from the Pine Island High School program, where he spent 28 years head coaching both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. During his time at Pine Island, Canton accumulated 353 wins as head coach, led Pine island to their first ever State Tournament appearance in 2013, six HVL conference titles, and one Section Coach of the year award in 2012.
Prior to his time at Pine Island, Coach Canton spent time as an assistant Men’s Basketball coach at Augsburg College from 1984-85, assistant boys’ basketball coach at Faribault Bethlehem Academy from 1983-84 and at Delano High School from 1981-83 and 1985-86.
“Rick is one of the most well-respected coaches in the state of Minnesota," said UST coach Ruth Sinn. "He's been with our program before, and it's great to bring him back. He's one of an elite group of coaches with more than 300 victories, his accomplishments in developing his student-athletes is impressive and his experience, recruiting connections, and knowledge in all areas of basketball will be a tremendous plus for our program and our student-athletes.”
Coach Canton resides in Pine Island with his wife Linda. He has three grown children, Nick, Laura and Whitney. Both daughters Laura and Whitney played collegiately in the MIAC.
