The Buzz

The 2011-2012 Tommies are young but have bolstered their depth with four new players. Coach Sara Evens has a nine-player roster, including just one senior (Shannon Richter) and one junior (Cassy Norton.

Last Week

St. Thomas placed 10th in a 22-team event at UW-Eau Claire to start the fall season. Sophomore Emma Wilson led the Tommies with a 36-hole score of 170, good for 25th place in a field of 122 players.

Coaching Staff

Evens is in her seventh season as UST head coach. She's guided the Toms to four NCAA Championship trips and three conference crowns (fall 2005, 2006, 2007)

2010 Recap

The 2010 Tommies' opened the season with a 12th-place finish at the Eau Claire Invitational and later was ninth out of 19 at the Warburg Invitational. At the D-III Classic, the women finished eighth. UST also placed fifth at the St. Ben's Invitational, then closed the fall season with a fifth-place finish at the MIAC Championships. Norton and Wilson placed eighth and ninth, respectively, at the MIAC Championships.

Who's Back

Richter is back for her fourth season, while Norton starts her third year. Wilson, Annelise Keune and Kristin Tischer are the team's three sophomores. Last school year in 17 rounds, Norton had an 88.9 stroke average; Wilson had a 90.1 stroke average; and Richter had a 91.1 average. In 2009-10, Norton averaged 89.6 for 15 rounds, while Richter averaged 87.8 for 17 rounds.

Newcomers

Player picThe Tommies have four freshamn on this season's roster, all from Minnesota. Katie Kruchten of St. Cloud Apollo (sown at right) shot a 171 in her first collegiate tournament and finished just one shot behind team leader Emma Wilson. Kayla Westling of Osseo also broke into the Tommie lineup and shot a 193 in two rounds. Mari Liestman of Becker and Paige Reinfeld of Legacy Christian Aacdemy are the other new players. Kruchten placed 18th at state, made honorable mention all-state and helped Apollo to its first-ever state-tournament team berth. Westling was a three-sport standout for Osseo. Liestman placed 55th in the 2011 Class AA state meet and 44th at state as a junior. Reinfeld placed 22nd and 35th in the last two Minnesota Class A state tournaments.

Key Dates

The Toms play Saturday and Sunday in the Wartburg Invite in Waverly, Iowa. The Toms will play four fall tournaments, capped by the Oct. 1-3 MIAC Championships at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids. They also will play four or more spring tournaments in 2012.
