Rachel Werdin posted her fourth consecutive multi-goal game and the host Tommie Women's Hockey recorded a 7-2 win over St. Benedict in MIAC play Friday night in Mendota Heights. The teams play again Saturday afternoon in St. Cloud.
Estee Franz had two goals for No. 10-ranked St. Thomas (14-3-5 overall, 10-1-4 MIAC), which extended its conference unbeaten streak to 13 (9-0-4).
The Toms took a 4-0 lead in the game's first 12:02. The Blazers scored twice in period two and hung tough, but UST scored three in a 4:33 span of the final period to pull away.
Paige Kittelson stopped 14 of 16 shots for the Toms, who stayed one point behind first-place Hamline, a 4-2 winner over St. Mary's.
Host St. John's scored twice in a 46-second span in the final six minutes and added a late empty-goal to score a 4-1 win over first-place and No. 13-ranked St. Thomas in MIAC men's hockey play in St. Cloud. The teams play again Saturday at 7 p.m. in Mendota Heights.
The Tommies (14-7-1 overall, 9-3-1 MIAC), who were outshot 37-20, had a seven-game win streak halted. Benjamin Myers stopped 33 of 36 shots for UST.
UST had won five consecutive road games.
St. Thomas freshman Frankie Spellman scored his first college goal late in period one. But St. Thomas would lead for just 1:21 on the night as the Johnnies soon tied the game.
