ST. PAUL – Leading 2-1 midway through the second half, the St. Thomas women's soccer team allowed a goal with 13:35 remaining in regulation to force a tie with UW-La Crosse on Sunday afternoon at South Field. With the draw, the Tommies and the Eagles each move to 1-0-1 on the year.
La Crosse opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Maddie Granos took a centering pass from teammate Alex Cording on the right side to score her first goal of the year and put the Eagles on top in the early going.
The Purple defense held strong for nearly 25 minutes, but in the 77th minute, the Eagles broke through and scored the equalizer to send the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, St Thomas was the only team to register a shot. The Tommies put up three shots in the opening overtime period, holding La Crosse without a look at the net. Nether team put a shot on target in the second overtime, and the two sides settled for the draw.
The shot count read 18-10 in favor of the Tommies, including a 9-5 mark on target. UST also held the advantage with a 6-3 tally in the corner kick department.
Olivia Elvidge finished the game with three saves and moves to 1-0-1 as the goalkeeper of record this year, while Kennedy Brault is also now 1-0-0 after making seven saves.
St. Thomas will be back in action again on Friday, Sept. 8 in River Falls, Wis., when it travels to take on UW-River Falls at 3:00 pm. The Tommies will then return home next Sunday to square off with St. Scholastica.
