Tommie Women's Soccer is hosting a Cancer Awareness Day and a fundraiser for alum Tessie Thompson Sylvester at Wednesday afternoon's MIAC home game against Augsburg.
The MIAC contest starts at 3:30 p.m. on South Field. Fans can offer cash/check donations on site or give online here at a Go Fund Me site called "Sylvester Joy and Sunshine Fund"
Tessie Thompson, a St. Thomas Athletic Hall of Famer honoree, All-America honoree and MIAC Player of the Year, is battling cancer on the heels of the tragic loss of her husband, John Sylvester, a beloved coach with Minneapolis United, who died last June 16 after fighting ALS disease.
"We are fundraising today for Tessie's treatments and for her two boys -- six-year-old Gus and five-year-old Freddy," said UST coach Sheila McGill. "Tessie was diagnosed with a stage-4 gland-based cancer. The cancer has spread to her lymph nodes and liver; doctors declared the cancer inoperable."
Thompson's father, Joe, is a longtime University of St. Thomas employee and works in the physcal plant.
