Sophomore Kate Heimer scored 2:25 into the second overtime to let No. 16-ranked Tommie Women's Soccer outlast St. Ben's, 2-1, in MIAC play on a steamy morning at UST's South Field. It was the conference opener for the Tommies.
After a scoreless first overtime marked by scoring chances each way, UST senior Mallory DeBoom dished to Heimer on the left side at the top of the box and her blast found the back of the net to decide the game at 102:25.
Heimer played in 20 games as a freshman in 2017 but didn't score a goal or an assist. In the Toms' current five-game win streak, she has two goals and four assists.
With a heat index approaching 100, both teams gutted out a hard-fought contest that neither squad could settle in regulation or the first overtime. UST had an 8-4 edge in shots on goal in the contest.
St. Thomas (5-1, 1-0) has won five consecutive games. It plays agains Sept. 22 against Gustavus (1 p.m.).
The game was moved up three hours to get ahead of the worst of the dangerous heat and humidity. Conditions were more challenging by the time the contest concluded at 12:25 p.m.
