Toms' Distance Medley quartet wins at Drake Relays

UST's distance medley relay team of junior Megan Terukina, senior Erika Tipp, senior Kayla Goeman, and junior Emily Gapinski placed first of 14 teams Friday morning at the Drake Relays in Des Moines.

St. Thomas clocked 11:49.12 and beat four scholarship teams from Division II and NAIA. Gapinski held off the anchor from Augustana (S.D.) to win by .97 of a second.

Goeman clocked just under 2:14 and pulled into fourth place at the baton pass. Gapinski was in third pace with 600 meters left, 30 meters back. She passed the Augustana runner in the final 70 meters to win a tight race, and finished her 1600 in 4:54.

Terukina (1200), Goeman (800) and Gapinski (1600) ran on the Tommies' NCAA champion indoor DM relay team in March. Angela Tipp ran the 400 on the national champion team but due to an injury was replaced today by her twin sister Erika.

As a measure of their improvement, Terukina, Goeman and Gapinski ran three of the legs but placed only 11th in this event last April in 12:03.

St. Thomas won this relay at Drake in 2009. That was the first time in 77 years that an MIAC team had placed first in a relay at Drake.

UST will run Saturday in the 4x800 relay and look for another top-three finish.

Earlier Friday, UST's 4x100 relay finished 28th in 50.29 with Tipp, Megan Maki, Katie Murray and Bailey Cook.

The men's 4x100 clocked 43.15 to place 25th with Joe Reed, Dan Sauro, Sean Murphy and Connor Bednarek.
