Saturday story

Junior Emily Gapinski placed second in the 1,500 meters and scored eight team points to lead Tommie women's track and field to a 22nd-place finish at the NCAA Championships in Canton, N.Y.

The Tommies finished with five All-Americas as the 4x400 relay placed sixth in 3:51.76 with Angela Tipp, Erika Tipp, Carly Barton and Kayla Goeman.

Gapinski clocked a career-best 4:26.76 and finished just .46 of a second behind Luther junior Tricia Serres.

Goeman just missed the final in the 800 meters on Friday as she placed 10th in the prelims in 2:12 and missed the nine-person finals by one.

On the men's side, St. Thomas' Matt Schauer placed ninth of 20 entrants in the shot put in 53-2 3-4 but missed scoring in the team standings by one place.

Gapinski capped an impressive junior season that included:

  • UST's 21st place national finish in cross country;
  • her anchor and winning kick that propelled UST's indoor distance medley relay to an NCAA title in March at nationals in a 13th-place team finish;
  • her anchor of the distance medley to a rare Drake Relays victory;
  • her contribution to MIAC team crowns indoors and outdoors;
  • today's runner-up NCAA finish after missing the finals in the same event one year earlier.

Gapinski is the Tommies' third NCAA runner-up at 1,500 meters in the last decade, joining Brigid Power in 2006 and Taylor Berg in 2013.
