Gapinski, Helstad sharp at La Crosse

Tommie senior All-America Emily Gapinski broke a school record for 800 meters and ran the second fastest Division III time thus far in 2016 as she led a 1-2 UST finish Thursday at the UW-La Crosse Last Chance track and field meet.

Gapinski (2:08.28) and Hannah Helstad (2:10.63) improved their NCAA chances. Gapinski broke Kayla Goeman's 2015 school record of 2:09.23 also set at La Crosse and now holds the first or second-best time nationally in the 800 and 1,500.

Helstad climbed to 15th on the national list. Kayla Janto took sixth in a career best time (2:13.72), and Ali Glassbrenner placed 11th (2:17.03).

In the 400 hurdles, Summer Ellefson placed eighth (64.34).

In the 1,500, Aimee Junget took third in 4:38.68, and Megan Terukina was sixth in 4:42.33. 

The Toms' 4x400 relay placed eighth in 3:55.49 with Helstad, Ellefson, Carly Barton and Janto.

In the javelin, Laura Eischens took eighth (113-2).

On the men's side, Connor O'Neill tied for second in the pole vault (15-5 3-4). In the long jump, Conor White (22-8), Michael Witschen (22-6 1-4) and Evan Cross (22-4 1-4) placed 5-8-9. In the triple jump, John Klun took seventh (41-10 3-4). In the hammer, Micah Hausman took eighth (165-11). In the shot put, Matt Schauer (52-11) and Hausman (51-7), placed 5-7.      

The NCAA qualifiers will be set on Monday for the May 25-28 competition in Waverly, Iowa.
