St. Thomas Women's Track and Field had several strong field-event performances to start the 2019 season last Saturday in Mankato at a meet hosted by the NCAA Division II Mavericks:
- Freshman Megan Gehrke, a shot put state champion last June at Faribault High, threw 45-10 1-2 in the shot put to top of field of 40 throwers, including more than a dozen from Division II programs. That throw would have ranked seventh best indoors in Division III last winter. She also threw 49-1 3-4 for eighth place in the weight throw.
- Senior All-America Grace Bordson (5-5 3-4) and Matilda McPherson (5-3 3-4) placed 1-2 in the high jump. Bordson cleared 5-6 last indoor season and 5-7 1-4 outdoors.
- Senior Kendall Novak and Mariah Terhaar placed 2-3 in the pole vault after each cleared 10-4.
St. Thomas is off competition the next four weeks but will have more athletes in action on Friday Jan. 11 and Friday Jan. 18 in home meets at Anderson Fieldhouse.
