Volleyball falls in four to Blazers in MIAC opener

St. Thomas Volleyball opened its home and MIAC seasons Wednesday night in Schoenecker Arena but watched the visiting St. Ben's Blazers storm to a 3-1 victory. St. Ben's triumphed by scores of 25-18, 25-14, 20-25, 25-9.

The Tommies (3-6 overall, 0-1 MIAC) hit just .154 to a .232 attack percentage by the Blazers (5-4, 1-0).

St. Ben's reeled off 15 service aces and got a double-double from Laura Schmitt (17 kills, 14 digs). The winners also hit .367 in the fourth set.

Whitney Lloyd had 11 kills and Rebecca Hawkins added nine kills and 13 digs for UST. Jennifer Wild recorded 22 digs and Katharine Mallak added 32 assists.

St. Thomas travels to Rock Island, Ill., and plays Friday night matches against Augustana (Ill.) and Beloit (Wis.).
