Tommie Volleyball won two matches Saturday to finish 2-2 at the Emory Classic in Atlanta, Ga. The Toms beat St. Mary's (Ind.), 3-1, and topped No. 25-ranked UW-Oshkosh, 3-0.
On Friday, UST lost 3-2 to Birmingham Southern and 3-1 to No. 4-ranked Emory. Those teams had a combined 59-10 match record last season.
UST scored 19 consecutive points during the final set win over Oshkosh en route to a 25-3 score. Freshman Ellie Meyer served all 19 points to push the Tommie lead to 19-1. Meyer contributed three aces to go with eight St. Thomas kills, and UST hit .271 vs. the Titans.
The Tommies play four matches next Friday and Saturday in Minneapolis at the Augsburg tournament.
Tommie Volleyball opened its 2016 season Friday with two hard-fought defeats in the Emory (Ga.) Classic in Atlanta.
UST led Birmingham Southern 2-0 but fell 3-2 (15-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-11).
The Toms came back against No. 4-ranked Emory and lost 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 22-25, 25-19).
UST senior Taylor Lewis had 12 kills and 14 digs in the Birmingham loss. Grace Duffy collected 17 kills, Ellie Meyer had 19 digs, Abby Louwagie had 25 assists and three aces, and Katharine Mallak added 27 assists.
Against Emory, Lewis had 10 kills and two aces, Meyer had 19 digs, and Louwagie chipped in 20 assists.
The Toms play two Saturday matches to finish the trip: St. Mary's (Ind.) and UW-Oshkosh, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Minnesota time.
