Volleyball splits two Friday matches at Auggie event

Tommie Volleyball had a tough opning schedule in Friday's action to open the two-day Augsburg Invitational. Coach Thanh Pham's squad faced two other teams that reached the NCAA playoffs last season.

St. Thomas couldn't close out UW-La Crosse and lost 3-2 in the opener. In the night match that spilled past 11 p.m., the Tommies topped Wartburg, 3-0, to avenge an NCAA playoff loss from last November. 

UST led La Crosse 2-1 in sets and took a 24-22 lead late in the fourth game. The Toms served match point three times, but the Eages rallied to stay alive and later claimed a with a 28-26 win. La Crosse broke to a 6-2 lead in the fifth set, where the teams play to 15. The Toms came back to tie the game 13-13 but La Cosse won the match with a 15-13 decision.

Ellie Meyer had 32 digs and Madie Kroehler had 22 digs and nine kills.

St. Thomas plays Cornell and UW-Eau Claire Saturday starting at noon.
